Biodynamic Viticulture

Biodynamics brings a sensitive, holistic approach to viticulture, nurturing and rebuilding the soil while producing premium quality fruit without chemical inputs.

Having been certified organic for many years, Biodynamics was introduced as an added tool to enhance the quality of the grapes grown on the vineyard. It has brought a balancing effect to canopy growth, the spectrum of different weeds, and a real liveliness to the soil composition.

Cows are happy on our vineyard.
Biodynamics is based on the teachings of Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian Philosopher, back in the 1920’s. He endorsed the natural farming techniques, with the use of a Lunar Calendar, as a timing reference for critical activities.  The most important preparations are the 500 (Cow horn manure preparation) and 501 (Cow horn silica preparation). Small amounts of these preparations are stirred with rain water for one hour and applied as a ground or atmospheric spray, at optimum times of the year, to enhance the soil and stimulate the soil bacteria.  There are other preparations, 502-508 which are used as inoculants in the making of teas and compost.

Our aim is to be totally sustainable with as little outside input as possible. As each year passes, we are gaining more confidence in our management practices and the whole concept of Biodynamics, which has opened an amazing connection with the vineyard. You spend more time in the vineyard or garden and learn to recognize the needs of the plants. Using the Antipodean Astro Calendar, by Brian Keats, you are able to anticipate weather changes, and plan accordingly and also interpret changes as they happen.

Biodynamics has become a way of life for us.

Annual audits by Australian Certified Organic, the certification body of Biological Farmers of Australia, earns us the right to display our certificate with the unique bud logo, which is a recognized logo Nationally and Internationally.
